One step into Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab on the corners of 15th & H St. NW, and you know you’re in a power dining haven. The sprawling high-ceiling interior, formerly a bank, with its massive marble columns and classically designed bar scream power lunch. See and be seen.
But Joe’s also wants to let you know that there’s more to them than that. Like a revamped Cocktail Hour with some bargain deals, including cheap bar bites and drink specials good for any day of the week. Or maybe every day of the week.
The new Cocktail hour bar menu is priced to move — the only item above the $5 threshold is the seafood trio for $5.95, including one jumbo shrimp cocktail, one oyster on the half shell and a serving of scallop and shrimp ceviche. Or stick to oysters and grab the oyster trifecta for $4.95.
The stars of the show are the sandwiches, including a dry-aged dip served with au jus $4.95, a fried oyster po’ boy for $3.95 and an Alaskan king crab roll for $4.95. Grab one of each and share bites and you’ll fill up quicker than you think.
You can also get a small serving of their famous breaded fried chicken, with two drumsticks for $3.95. On the snack side, try either beer battered frickles or warm house-made potato chips for $1.95.
The only real miss amongst the bar bites is the mac and cheese ham sticks, in mozzarella stick form, which are fine enough but may be a case of trying too hard to turn things more casual instead of sticking with what works. The fried chicken, steak sandwich and the crab roll, for example, are all tasty and at a great price, and are all just smaller versions of items already on the regular menu.
Signature cocktails are typically $12 but a handful are knocked down to $6.95 for happy hour, including Tito’s Moscow Mule, the Bombay Collins, the High West Rye Rickey, a Bacardi Daiquiri and the Pearlman’s Punch. The drinks are all fresh and crisp, and you know what you’re getting — there’s no sneaking in bottom shelf booze into your happy hour drink.
Select glasses of wine are also available for $6.95, all draft beers are half price, and Heinekens are $2.95.
The new Cocktail hour at Joe’s is available Monday-Friday from 4 to 6:30pm.
